The Quincy Pirates opened with a 4-1 loss to the Pepperell Red Dogs in Danvers at Twi Field. In a matchup that is usually an offensive showcase, Jeff Tully pitched a stellar game for the Dogs. He outdueled the Pirates Paul Aseltine who was making his 11th straight opening day start for the Pirates/We Got Corn. The Dogs scratched a few runs across early, and it would be the difference as the Pirates bats were frozen in a bone chilling 48 degrees afternoon matinee.

In Game 2, the Pirates faced off against the Indians. Eddie Lamb got the ball for the Pirates as Andy Burkett was a late scratch from the game with an undisclosed vagina. From the get go, the Pirates looked unready to play as they committed 6 errors and did not pick up Lamb on the defensive end. On the offensive end, the Pirates woke up from some early season doldrums and battled back from deficits of 5-0 and 10-3.

Jackson Schuyler continued his torrid start to the season at the plate with a 3 for 4 day as his average sits a red hot.714. Dillon Search Wells and Paul Aseltine (who was unavailable to start the game) pitched admirably to close out the game and keep the Bucs in it, but they eventually fell 10-7 while managing to get the tying run to the plate in the 7th.

In the their third week of action, the Pirates had a double dip against the CABL expansion team Brookline Dodgers. The Bucs sent Aseltine to the hill and the Dodgers made a surprise counter with former RRBL Spirit Steve Lippi.

It did not go well for Lippi.

The Pirates offense broke loose for hits, walks, and stolen bases and things got away from Lippi quick. One play included the first “homerun" in several years from a Pirate. Dillon “Nonchalant" Search Wells ripped a ball down the line and did a home run trot all the way home, good for a double and a two base error. Jory Curran capped the game with a double to the fence in Salem that almost walked off the Pirates with a mercy. Instead, Curran scored on a wild pitch with a face first flop at home-plate.

Game 2 was a bit closer, as the Bucs sent rookie Tyler Turgeon to the bump in game two while Andy Burkett was still serving a team mandated suspension for his pre-season arrest. Turgeon sparkled early, but his defense did him no favors as a few passed balls and wild pitches and errors got the Dodgers a couple runs and it was 2-2 after 4 even while barely hitting the ball out of the infield. The Bucs would immediately answer with a 5-run 5th, capped by a Turgeon 2 run single to help his own cause. Turgeon struggled with his command a bit as he opened the 5th and forced the hand of manager Dave Ascoli, who turned to disgraced former #2 starter Burkett to shut the door with three shutout innings. The bucs chipped on two more insurance runs in the 6th to make it a 9-4 final score. While Turgeon faltered late, the signs were encouraging enough that he could shake off the rust and round into good form for the Pirates moving forward.

Early season notables include:

-Jory Curran and Jackson Schuyler being in the top 5 of the league in nearly every offensive category.

-The potential discovery of a #3 starter (Turgeon)

-All the injuries the team is dealing with out of the gate: Nate Fishman (wrist, 0 GP), Dan Brookfield (ankle, 0 GP), Brian Benulis (shoulder surgery 4 GP none in the outfield) and Andy Burkett (maternity leave).

The Bucs currently sit at 2-2 after 4 games. They plan to flip the switch and be a contender in a very crowded CABL South Division.
